Advanced EMDR and Couples: Attachment is for everyone, the interweaving of EMDR and EFT

Next Course: October 20 and 21 2023 from 9 am to 4:30

This course is virtual and limited to 30 seats.

This is an EFT informed workshop for EMDR trained professionals.

People are hard-wired for connection.  When attachment longings are not met, couples form painful patterns of interactions. Emotionally Focussed Therapy, EFT, provides a map, making the distressing patterns understandable, and the therapeutic work doable.  EFT teaches therapists to see emotional triggers through an attachment lens, and to slow the couple’s patterns down, and de-escalate them. Couples learn to share their triggers, and emotions, owning their behavior.

Some couples have attachment trauma.  Their cycles are difficult to slow and de-escalate because people are terrified.  Couples remain stuck and in emotional pain, re-experiencing attachment trauma when their attachment needs are not met.  EMDR is a powerful intervention, used to resolve traumatic memories, allowing people to feel calmer.

In this workshop, the EFT steps for de-escalating a couples’ pattern of distress are taught and practiced.  EMDR and the Body Protocols designed by Catherine Lidov, and Safe State Protocol by K. O’Shea are taught and practiced.  How and when to weave very slow and short Bilateral Stimulation sets into the moves of EFT will be taught, modeled, and practiced.

The instructor of this workshop has been weaving EMDR into the steps of EFT, and has found EMDR helps to reduce the immediate stressful re-experiencing of attachment trauma, helping couples benefit from EFT.  Couples are able to de-escalate more quickly and experience a sense of secure bond more fully.

In this Advanced  EMDR Training the following learning objectives will be taught.

You will:

  1. Discuss emotional and relational distress from an attachment perspective.

  2. Learn and practice the five steps of EFT Tango. (S. Johnson, 2019)

  3. Apply the Tango to the distressing pattern for de-escalation.

  4. Practice the Container, Orient, and Safe State, by C. Lidov and K. O’Shea.

  5. Examine the difference between reactive and core emotional action tendencies.

  6. Choreograph an enactment interweaving slow, body-oriented BLS.

This workshop is educational and experiential.

Information will be taught via a powerpoint presentation, modeling, videos, small and large practice and discussion.

In small groups, participants will work together, taking turns being clinician and clients, practicing EFT moves and interventions, EMDR protocols, and weaving the EMDR into the moves of EFT.

In small groups, you will have time to debrief after each practice session, so you feel supported in your work.
